Avoid smoking if all possible since it leads to many other health hazards. Get your protein levels checked every year at your annual physical to ensure levels are in range. Keep your weight in a healthy range. By maintaining a healthy body fat ratio and weight you are reducing kidney damage. Limit your alcohol intake. Drinking excessive alcohol can lead to other health issues. Make sure to get regular exercise at least 3 to 4 times a week. You should monitor your salt intake. If you have high pressure or diabetes be sure to take your medications as prescribed.

Diabetes can severally affect the kidneys functions. The kidneys filter blood and help your body excrete toxins. But when you have diabetes, high blood sugar levels can damage the delicate structure of your kidneys and over a period, they can become less cap able to filter properly.

Kidney damage associated with diabetes is called nephropathy. The damage is progressive and can eventually result in kidney failure.
